Imperial Treasure Nan Bei Restaurant, Suntec City
The BF and I were fighting off an intermittent flu-induced fever so running became a choppy and inconsistent affair.
It was a good day, so we decided to go for a short run after work from home to Suntec. We've been to Crystal Jade Kitchen so often that we decided that a change of scenery was in order. So, we popped into Imperial Treasure Nan Bei Restaurant, which is a hop and skip away from Crystal Jade Kitchen.
There are many reasons why the Imperial Treasure group of restaurants has become a formidable competitor of the Crystal Jade chain of restaurants in a relatively short span of time. The food is consistently good, there is a good selection of Cantonese and Shanghainese food, the staff are well-trained and unfailingly polite and accommodating, and the price points are competitively similar to its contemporary.
The BF got the Dry Soya Sauce Chicken Noodle ($6), perfectly al dente noodles lightly drizzled with oyster sauce gravy, served with juicy soya sauce chicken breast meat (great for the BF's health regime) and blanched choy sum. This was classically Cantonese, simple and satisfying.
This was served with a saucer of pounded spring onions, garlic and ginger sauce for the chicken, which lent a piquancy which cut through the saltiness of the soya sauce marinade of the chicken. Sorry, the BF lapped this up before I managed to get a picture of it.
We got a dim sum dish, Steamed BBQ Pork Buns ($3), fragrant, fluffy buns encasing smoky, glazed and sweet bbq pork. This was wonderfully aromatic and wholesome.
We got a soup (because soup is always good for you), the Pork and Vegetable Wanton Soup ($4.50), 6 gargantuan wantons of ground pork mixed with chives which lent a clean, fresh taste, in a light chicken soup base that delicately balanced the richness of the pork. I liked it so much I actually requested 3 refills of the soup (each rice bowl refill is chargeable at $1 per bowl)!
